This book is a comparative study of the figure of the Virgin Mary in the dramas of late medieval England and France. The depiction of Mary in the French and English traditions is quite distinctive, yet there have been no comparative studies of these dramas from any perspective. What makes this project particularly significant is that the performances of the dramas were social and political events that were publicly produced and consumed and hence had a direct and powerful societal impact. Witt's work has important implications for general histories of medieval literature as well as studies in medieval images of women. (Marjorie Curry Woods, The University of Texas at Austin)
