Sustainability. An expected objective; an expected principle of tourism development and management. However, the achievement of an appropriate balance across the economic, social and environmental factors influencing the realisation of broadbased sustainable tourism practices is easier said than done. Sustainable development requires the coordinated, multidimensional engagement of all actors across multiple-scales and demands a functional interaction between policy and practice, between the local and the global. In exploring these interactions from an international perspective, this volume draws together seven case studies, which contextually explore how sustainability is being defined, planned and implemented in tourism in countries such as Germany, Italy, Mexico and Vietnam, among others. The cases highlight contextual successes and remaining challenges for sustainable tourism planning and management and contribute to a broadened perspective on the central issues that remain in the attempt to enhance tourism as a sustainable industry in practice.
