Only a few years ago, it was just as certain that the church is a membership organization. Then, the focus was above all on how to manage scarce resources, today it is on how to enable fleeting encounters. At that time the declared goal was to grow just like a profit-maximizing enterprise, today it is to seize every opportunity for communication, just like digital media. This susceptibility to intellectual fashions is irritating. The church sees itself as contemporary by taking over leading concepts of the public discourse which include in fact terminologies of organization and networking.
