Most orthopedic surgeons prefer to read their patients MR imaging studies themselves rather than rely on the radiologists report. This is important because a study published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery compared the findings of a radiologist s report and an orthopedic surgeon s preoperative diagnosis, following an examination and reading of the images with actual surgical findings. It was found that the surgeon s preoperative diagnosis was significantly more accurate than the radiologist s report. The study said that the formal interpretation of the MRI scan by the radiologist had inaccuracies and did not correlate with the initial diagnosis.
